The Grand Finale to the Festival will be a five course Victorian Gala Dinner on the evening of September 13th.
The gala dinner, which will be held in a stunning marquee on the Parade, is part of a two year programme of events to raise awareness of Berwick’s rich food heritage. In 1841, some 2,500 guests enjoyed a sumptuous feast in the Barracks Square, the first Highland Agricultural Society event to be held outside Scotland. On that occasion, the guests enjoyed a series of elaborate courses interspersed with toasts and speeches. While, in 1841, Victorian ladies had to content themselves with merely watching proceedings from the balcony, in 2009 everyone will be welcome to join in the fun including a brief account of the original event from the master of ceremonies.
As well as the delicious Victorian themed meal, there will be musical entertainment from Lizzie and Hamish Bell. The menu for this special occasion was devised by Mike Gulliver, Executive Chef at DM Event Catering after considerable research. While the dishes have been inspired by the nineteenth century they will be just as tasty and acceptable to twenty first century palates! As far as possible the menu will feature local meats, vegetables, fruits and cheeses. Click here to see the proposed menu. A vegetarian option will also be available, please order when booking.
